Waltermade Health Care Center

The Waltemade Health Care Center, designed by Breger Terjesen Associates, is a 160 bed skilled nursing facility completed in 1998 in the center of “The Wartburg”, an historic 20 acre wooded campus in Mt. Vernon, NY. The new 4 story structure located on a gently sloping site on the west side of the “village green”, is the focal point for the complex. In keeping with the character of this 100 year old campus, no part of the building is more than 3 stories high.
The entrance is located on the first floor opposite the existing 80 bed facility with a traditional “Porte Cochere”. The second floor houses a 40 patient rehabilitation unit, rehabilitation, therapy and recreations spaces, chapel, beauty parlor and other common areas. This floor also has access to the central courtyard with its relaxing sitting areas and pond. The third floor contains two 40 resident units with dining rooms overlooking the “village green” and circular lounges facing the courtyard. The fourth floor contains the Alzheimer unit with its private aromatic garden, continuous walking paths and activity spaces.
Also included in the project was the upgrading of the existing 80 bed nursing facility and the construction of the “Wartburg bridge” between the 2 buildings, thus creating a 240 bed facility.
